Arrangement into groups or categories on the basis of established criteria. The word may have two meanings, one primarily signifying a division required by statutes, fundamental and substantial, and the other secondary, signifying an arrangement or enumeration adopted for convenience only
@ classification of crimes
A grouping of crimes. Taxonomy which may be based on the seriousness of the crime, e.g. felony or misdemeanor, or on the nature of the crime, e.g. malum prohibitum or malum in se, or on the objects of the crime, e.g. crimes against property or crimes against the person. Felonies and misdemeanors are also classified under federal statutes and sometimes in state statutes as Class A, B, etc., with punishments set for each class. 18 U.S.C.A. No. 3559.
Crimes are also commonly classified into degrees; e.g., first and second degree murder; and also as voluntary or involuntary (e.g. manslaughter).
